چکیده

[1] We propose a solitary wave model for small scale magnetic structures observed in the solar wind and more recently in the Voyager 1 observations of the heliosheath. The model is based on the recent, fully nonlinear theory of solitary waves by McKenzie et al. (2001, 2004). Our solutions i.e., magnetic holes, humps, trains of holes and humps, are strongly nonlinear (70 to 80% change in the magnetic field at the centre), propagate at large angles (>60 ) to the mean magnetic field and are well approximated by Gaussians. The structures are almost pressure balanced with an anti-correlation between the magnetic field and the plasma density, and no change in the magnetic vector across the structure. These features are consistent with observations of magnetic structures in the heliosheath. Citation: Avinash, K., and G. P. Zank (2007), Magnetic structures in the heliosheath, Geophys. Res. Mirror and firehose instabilities in the heliosheath

We investigate the nature of the heliosheath plasma behind the Termination Shock across which jump relations in anisotropic MHD are formulated. Along side analytical results for downstream parameters in the strictly parallel and perpendicular cases we numerically solve the Rankine-Hugoniot relations for arbitrary shock angle and strength. We then focus on two temperature anisotropy driven insta...

The Solar Wind in the Outer Heliosphere and Heliosheath

The solar wind environment has a large influence on the transport of cosmic rays. This chapter discusses the observations of the solar wind plasma and magnetic field in the outer heliosphere and the heliosheath. In the supersonic solar wind, interaction regions with large magnetic fields form barriers to cosmic ray transport. This effect, the “CR-B” relationship, has been quantified and is show...

There is currently a controversy as to whether Voyager 1 has already crossed the Termination Shock, the first boundary of the Heliosphere. The region between the Termination Shock and the Heliopause, the Helisheath, is one of the most unknown regions theoretically. In the Heliosheath magnetic effects are crucial, as the solar magnetic field is compressed at the Termination Shock by the slowing ...

Energetic Particle Anisotropies at the Heliospheric Boundary. Ii. Transient Features and Rigidity Dependence

In the preceding paper, we showed that large second-order anisotropies of heliospheric ions measured by the Voyager 1 space probe during the August 2012 boundary crossing event could be explained by a magnetic shear across the heliopause preventing particles streaming along the magnetic field from escaping the inner heliosheath. According to Stone et al., the penetration distance of heliospheri...

Observations of the Heliosheath and Solar Wind near the Termination Shock By

This paper describes the principal features of 24 hr averages of the magnetic field strength variations B(t) and their relationships to the plasma and energetic particles observed prior to and after the crossing of the termination shock (TS) by Voyager 2 (V2). The solar wind (pre-TS crossing) and heliosheath (post-TS crossing) data extend from day of year (DOY) 1 through 241, 2007 and from 2007...
